Found an useful video in Youtube regarding Branching and Merging by Laura Wingerd, author of the book 'Practical Perforce'. Interestingly she compares working with branches to driving a car!
She has introduced the need for branching and the various branching strategies through a simple comparison between the ideal world and the real world.
It's a rather lengthy Video (abt an hour long). Make sure you have some time before setting out to watch the video.
